_Elementary School Music Residency by Paula Roberts
featured in the Artists in Schools Residency Program Roster by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts

CANADA and our music is the theme for the week.  By performance time we are surrounded by red and white emblems and designs, and we find ourselves humming our way down the halls to a now familiar Canadian repertoire!   Activities include:
  • Singing - Students prepare and perform eight pieces of music from across Canada.  Included in the program are songs from composers such as Oscar Peterson, Gordon Lightfoot, and James Keelaghan.  Each one has been chosen for its uniquely Canadian content and origin.
  • Movement - Actions and dance steps enhance the lyrics and put smiles on many faces!
  • History and Geography - Every song and composer is discussed in depth.  Many of the songs were not only written by Canadians, but are about specific events or places in Canada.
  • Art - Students create the “set” (murals for the gym walls) and props to enhance the final presentation for parents and friends.
There are three artists involved in this week long residency.  Paula Roberts has designed the program and teaches all of the music and dance.  She is assisted by Chris Andrew, pianist, who provides professional accompaniment and coaches some of the solo parts.  Twyla Supervich, research assistant, brings biographical, historical, and geographical information to each class.  She also guides the teachers in their role to help students in the creation of artwork and props.

The participation by the teachers is an important part of the success of this residency.   A good portion of every day is devoted to rehearsal and set making.  This work is outlined and guided by the Residency Team of Artists.  Projects are then completed by the students and teachers on their own.  Although there is time each day for some regular curriculum study, the school becomes totally immersed in preparation for the “big show” that caps the week!

The use of the gym and one other room, such as the music room or art room will be required for the week.  Materials required: paper for murals and flags (manila tag), and markers, paints, etc. for decorating are items you have on hand at school.  All specialty items will be provided by the artists.

“The Canadian Music Express” residency can accommodate up to approximately 350 students from Kindergarten to Grade 6.
